GVL data | Star Magpie Ben Giobbi’s Influential Role Change

Making an impact: Euroa star Ben Giobbi has been thrust into a new role in recent weeks.

Throughout his career at Memorial Oval, Euroa star Ben Giobbi has often been considered one of the best ball winners in the Goulburn Valley League.

But in 2022, the pocket rocket has its biggest impact forward, as Euroa ride an eight-game winning streak.

Starting the season in midfield, Magpies manager Scott Rowan made the switch ahead of their crucial sixth-round clash with Mooroopna as his star player returned from a foot injury.

Giobbi’s influence on the Magpies’ offensive setup was immediate, scoring twice in the first quarter as they beat a previously undefeated Cats side on the road.

Delivering an exciting new look to his forward line, Rowan has stuck with the change over the past month, with Giobbi rewarding him with a string of strong performances.

None, however, stands out more than his game against Mansfield in the ninth round, as he set the Eagles’ home deck on fire with five goals, 21 eliminations and three 50-year-old interiors in the 64-point win. Euroa.

And perusing the stats courtesy of GVL Data, the role shift is evident.

Since advancing to the sixth round, Giobbi has scored 13 goals and registered eight assists.

In the three games he played as a pure midfielder earlier in the year, he scored just one goal and had no assists in scoring.

As a result of this move, Giobbi’s kill count increased from 24 hits per game in rounds 1–3 to 20.8 between rounds 6–11.

Meanwhile, despite a nine-clearance game against Tatura last week, his work around the stoppage dwindled, registering just six clearances over a five-game span from Rounds 6-10.

As Euroa continues to charge into September, it may be Giobbi’s forward impact that will guide him to that coveted drought-breaking premiership.
